DMC Harper University Hospital to Install RFID Technology from Mobile Aspects

E-mail Print

PITTSBURGH & DETROIT, Mobile Aspects announced today that the DMC Harper University Hospital will implement a radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled inventory management system to store, track, and manage the utilization of high cost devices and supplies supporting cardiology services. Developed by Mobile Aspects, Inc., of Pittsburgh, Pa., the system, called iRISupply, uses an RFID tracking architecture to automate charge capture, inventory management, device expiration management, and other key operational processes within the patient care setting.

The organization will implement fourteen iRISupply cabinet units to manage the storage and utilization of implantable stent devices within their cardiac catheterization laboratory suites at the DMC Harper University Hospital location. In leveraging the RFID-enabled technology, the organization seeks to create a more efficient, automated process for managing these high-cost items and in turn, realize more streamlined and accurate processes in documenting device utilization for billing and inventory management.

As our case volumes continue to grow rapidly we have identified the need to provide our staff with a solution that can address the challenges of effectively managing a corresponding increase in the volume of expensive medical device inventory, shared Jim Stopford, Vice President of Diagnostic and Interventional Services at Harper. With the RFID-enabled technology, we can significantly reduce the manual processes needed from our staff to manage these items and concurrently realize immediate returns through areas such as more accurate charge capture and avoidance of device expiration. Implementation of the iRISupply system will begin in fall 2007.

The iRISupply system is part of the Mobile Aspects One System of CARE solution, which employs identification and information technologies to automate processes for clinical resource management by healthcare providers. One System of CARE uses Texas Instruments Inc.s Tag-it HF-I portfolio of high-frequency ISO/IEC 15693 RFID tags. By automating the storage, tracking, utilization, and billing of clinical resources through RFID, healthcare providers realize enhanced care quality, increased productivity, accurate billing, and significant inventory cost savings.
