European Project CE RFID discusses Guidelines and Legal Aspects

E-mail Print

METRO Group and Deutsche Post World Net invite experts on RFID guidelines and regulatory issues to a workshop at the DHL Innovation Centre in Troisdorf/Bonn, Germany on September 10th. This workshop is part of the European project CE RFID (Coordinating European Efforts for Promoting the European RFID Value Chain). RFID is considered to become a key technology in future IT systems. However, many potential users are facing basic questions: Are there any guidelines for the use of RFID in my business? Which legal regulations must be obeyed? The European project CE RFID will discuss these matters at a workshop. Experts from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), NXP Semiconductors Austria GmbH, and Deutsche Post World Net will introduce the topics "Guidelines" and "Legal Aspects".

Guidelines

Companies of various sectors have gained a considerable experience in testing or implementing RFID technology. However, there seems to be a lack of broadly available practical knowledge concerning the introduction of RFID. One of the key challenges for companies using RFID is to create guidelines for the use of the technology in their specific application field. Harald Kelter, Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and Cord Bartels, NXP will open the discussion by presenting their current work on technical guidelines for implementation and utilisation of RFID-based systems. Afterwards the participants of the workshop will elaborate criteria for appropriate guidelines.

Legal Aspects

The development and deployment of RFID shall already comply with numerous national and European regulations, e.g. radio licenses, CE certificates, employment and data protection. However, there are some legal open questions regarding for instance data security or the re-cycling of RFID transponders that require specific analysis. Gabriela Krader, Corporate Data Protection Officer of Deutsche Post World Net, will exemplify regulation matters regarding RFID at Deutsche Post. The workshop participants will then discuss and assess the regulatory framework for European RFID users.
