Tracking airport baggage with RFID Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 October 2007

Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) will present its new system for efficient baggage identification using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology in the UHF band for the first time at the inter airport Europe 2007 trade show. Simatic RBS (RFID Baggage System) is specially tailored to baggage recognition in airport baggage handling. It offers more efficiency in baggage management and is easily integrated. For example, the reading rate is significantly higher than that of conventional barcode systems, reducing the amount of wrongly directed baggage and cutting baggage handling costs.

The IATA (International Air Transport Association) estimates the global savings potential through the use of such RFID solutions is a 3-digit figure.
Simatic RBS, based on the IATA RP1740c recommendations, captures items of baggage accurately and reliably. The baggage is transported on a conveyor belt through a tunnel equipped with contactless RFID read/write systems in the UHF range. Individual items are fitted with an RFID "BagTag" featuring an integrated antenna, microprocessor and memory for data exchange.

The data is read in real time, processed quickly with efficient algorithms, and made available to the higher-level baggage management system. Neighboring Simatic RBSs do not interfere each other. The new system has already been tested at the Siemens Airport Center in Fürth, Germany in exhaustive long-term tests under realistic conditions to establish functional safety and throughput in practical use.

Simatic RBS uses standard components from Siemens A&D and can thus be easily integrated into existing automation structures such as already installed baggage conveyor systems. This simplifies installation and startup, enables precise planning of the time required, and guarantees the reliability of the system right from the start.
