IBM Extends Lead in Business Event Processing Software With New Products, Services PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 12 September 2008

IBM extended its leadership in business event processing, introducing new products and services and mapping out a vision for the future of a market that Credit Suisse notes is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 17.7 percent through 2012 reaching $2.6 billion revenue versus $1.1 billion in 2007. The same report notes that IBM is the industry leader in business event processing with 63.8 percent of the market.

Businesses are facing an explosion of business information from email, voicemail and new sources such as RFID. It is estimated that there are now up to 72 quadrillion unique business events generated worldwide each day, and this figure is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The ability to process these information streams quickly and accurately is one of the most complex tasks facing businesses today, requiring massive computing power and the most advanced software and hardware available.

With today's announcement, IBM completes the foundation for the industry's most comprehensive event processing portfolio. The technology can automatically track, analyze and respond to changing business conditions -- whether the events that trigger them are planned or unplanned. Unlike other vendors, IBM business event processing software incorporates both business and IT events into a single, unified business view that taps the greatest number of information sources in the industry.

The recent IBM CEO study reinforced the importance that business leaders have placed on business event processing when it revealed that more than 60 percent of all CEOs say they are looking for faster access to, and management of, the information that can be gleaned from the massive streams of data they face everyday.

IBM's business event processing technology not only recognizes these events but puts them in context and channels them into the hands of business leaders. This allows businesses to directly identify and analyze cause-and-effect relationships among events in real time in order to make more intelligent and proactive decisions.

"Our clients are looking for technologies to help them identify and analyze business information in real time, helping them make faster, more accurate business decisions and quickly seize business opportunities," said Steve Mills, Senior Vice President and Group Executive IBM Software Group. "To address this, we are leveraging unique IBM technologies for very high-scale transaction and message processing, combined with acquired technologies from InfoDyne, Micromuse, Solid, AptSoft and Cognos. This combination of leading-edge technology and skills uniquely positions IBM to lead the market for high-performance, event-driven systems."

The IBM business event processing portfolio, with 3,770 customers worldwide, is used by 18 of the top 20 Fortune 500 companies and the top 20 Global 500 banks. The proven solution offers greater scalability than any other vendor, and can process more than 1.6 million events per second with less than one millisecond latency -- the largest volumes and fastest speeds in the industry.

During a briefing of IT industry analysts, IBM mapped out the future of the business event processing market, illustrating through proven customer and industry-specific examples that while the technology may have begun within the financial services industry -- where the need to make split-second decisions in a low-latency and high trade volume environment is common -- it has now crossed over into every major industry worldwide. IBM detailed its vision for this technology, and illustrated how it gives clients a combined view of the factors influencing their business allowing them to make smarter, faster decisions.

Supporting this, IBM presented numerous client success stories that span geographies and industries, including Airbus, Active Care Network, ISO New England and SK Telecom.

SK Telecom, for example, found that its existing mobile telecommunications service infrastructure couldn't handle the increasing volume nor real-time requirements of its growing customer base. By deploying the IBM business events processing solution it achieved faster response times and now processes between 50 million to 100 billion messages per day.

The new IBM products and services represent the unification of several IBM global initiatives, including Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Information on Demand, Virtualization and Web 2.0. They combine business process management (BPM) and business event processing software to quickly and accurately predict, detect, analyze and act upon the flood of events they face everyday:

  • WebSphere Business Events V6.2 - Delivers business event processing through intuitive business user tools that define, implement, and manage business events. Version 6.2 provides improved integration with IBM business process management products and delivers enhancements to the business user tools

  • WebSphere Business Events eXtreme Scale V6.2 - Offering extreme scale capability for high event volume customers

  • WebSphere Business Monitor - Provides support for events sent from WebSphere Business Events, with the ability to monitor via a Blackberry or iPhone

  • WebSphere Front Office for Financial Markets - Built on technology acquired from InfoDyne, this will provide rich platform capability and low latency messaging integration

  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus and IBM Tivoli Network Manager and Tivoli Business Service Manager - Current and upcoming versions will include new predictive analytics capabilities that can enable customers to predict potential events such as network outages, online trading transaction failures, cell phone service disruptions or retail point-of-sale downtime. The new capabilities in the IBM Tivoli Netcool software improve event management by using trending and historical data to help customers proactively manage millions of potential events per day. The Tivoli software shares event and dashboard views with Websphere Business Process Events, and Websphere Business Monitor, bringing improved visibility of both business and IT events
  •

  • InfoSphere Streams Early Access Program - InfoSphere Streams will provide a new database that can provide analysis of extreme volumes of information at high speeds

  • CICS Transaction Server Support Pac - Provides new integration with WebSphere Business Events

  • IBM Event Management and Monitoring Services - Offers design guidance and deployment services with a focus on event management and monitoring for IT systems, IT services and business performance management. The services will help clients gain the most from their event management system and turn multiple monitoring data streams into manageable information

Today's announcement reinforces IBM's recently announced Business Process Management (BPM) suite, an integrated set of role-based, SOA-enabled software that enables clients to design, execute, and improve core business processes. The suite brings together capabilities from across IBM to address typical customer scenarios involving systems, applications, content, people and decisions.

The IBM BPM suite has helped companies improve business processes across heterogeneous environments, which include high-volume transactions, extensive human interaction and broad uses of content, data and information. The suite empowers business users to take advantage of BPM capabilities without additional reliance on IT staff.

The new predictive capabilities are available now in new versions of IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus and IBM Tivoli Network Manager software. The capabilities will also be in the new version of Tivoli Business Service Manager, which will be available later this year.
