The Swedish government owned corporation Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) is considered one of the world's largest producers of upgraded iron-based products for the steel industry. Located in a remote area near the Arctic Circle, LKAB's Malmberget and Kiruna mines produce roughly 25 million tons of raw ore annually.

The WATCHERMINE system at the LKAB mines consists of active RFID tags worn by more than 1,000 LKAB miners, readers that gather the information provided by the tags, and monitoring software for data processing.
