Milton Public Library has boosted efficiency and increased productivity with a 7-bin Vista FullSort automated materials handing (AMH) sorting system from the Integrated Technology Group (ITG), a division of Vernon Library Supplies, Inc. The Vista Sorting and the Apex VistaReturns Software is an automated conveyor system designed to accept returned items, reactivate item security, separate materials that are on reserve, and assign the other items to their appropriate locations. As items enter the system, they are identified, checked in, and sorted based on library defined criteria.
"We knew we wouldn't be able to expand our staff to keep up with our increasing circulation and rapidly growing collection," said Philip McNulty, director of Milton Public Library. "The 7-bin sorting system from ITG is a key element to help us manage the library's increasing activity level."
The 7-bin sorting system was installed at the Milton Public Library during a recent renovation, completed April 2. With the new system, returned items are automatically sorted into bins by subject matter or other criteria in preparation for reshelving. The system also alerts staff when a bin is full and should be emptied. The system can also be configured to automatically print a "holds" ticket for each item that is on reserve.
"Our recent renovations will give our library the space to grow and expand our collection from approximately 100,000 to more than 135,000 items, but it is the technology that will help our staff handle the additional volume," said McNulty.
