3M Library Systems introduces 3M Tag Data Manager's newest feature, a Non Standard Tag Data Interface Plug-In; this new feature gives the 3M Tag Data Manager the capability to read non-3M tags in nonstandard formats. The new offering allows libraries with ISO RFID Tags the option of upgrading their systems to 3M hardware without having to retag their existing collections. As more libraries and vendors move toward standardization, the system offers 3M customers an efficient migration path that can be implemented with minimal disruption.
3M's laboratory will develop a customized "plug-in" for each eligible library customer, allowing their new 3M system to read ISO RFID tags from other suppliers-without having to retag the collection. With this capability, libraries can upgrade their systems to the latest technology from 3M, taking advantage of 3M's worldwide infrastructure and support from its nationwide service team.
The NS TDI Plug-In is one among three potential options for libraries to use 3M hardware to read their existing tags. Collections that currently use ISO-compliant tags and a standardized format are already compatible with the 3M Tag Data Manager, making these systems easy to convert. Alternately, if a library's existing ISO tags are unlocked, they may be reprogrammed to the 3M Tag Data Format. These options, in addition to the NS TDI Plug-In, mean that every library can have the option of using 3M's industry-leading library systems.
The NS TDI Plug-In is the latest move from 3M toward increased library to library and system to system inter-operability, in preparation for the International Organization for Standards' forthcoming Data Model for Use of RFID in Libraries. The company has long been a leader for standards in the library market, from its role in the development of Standard Interchange Protocol (SIP) 2.0, to its involvement with the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and International Organization for Standards (ISO). In 2008, 3M became the first vendor to make its own tag format available to its customers upon request. This new innovation further widens the 3M system's capabilities, offering libraries more choices in which hardware vendor to work with, as well as the ability to make changes as needed.
