Avery Dennison RFID Inlays Meet IATA Requirement for Tagging Luggage

E-mail Print

Avery Dennison recently announced that its RFID inlays have passed the specifications and system tests and met the performance requirements established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for the tagging of luggage and bags at airports.

This Avery Dennison RFID technology has already been successfully deployed in tagging solutions at Las Vegas and Hong Kong airports, where it has been involved in the tracking of millions of transported items and goods. For example, through its partnership with Motorola and Print-O-Tape, Avery Dennison will supply Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) with inlays for up to 70 million RFID enabled baggage tracking tags.

"Working with a variety of partners, Avery Dennison RFID is emerging as the inlay solution of choice for aviation and bag tagging applications," said Maggie Bidlingmaier, global director of sales & marketing, Avery Dennison RFID Division. "This growth reflects the superior performance that Avery Dennison AD-833 inlays provide for baggage tracking applications that require consistent, reliable tracking. The use of RFID technology helps the airports provide the necessary security to protect passengers and crew, while reducing costs and improving customer satisfaction."

Recent studies have demonstrated that the deployment of RFID systems for bag tagging can provide a rapid return on investment (ROI) by increasing accuracy and reliability of read rates. RFID tags eliminate bad reads from damaged bar codes and help reduce the costs of locating and delivering misplaced luggage, which cost airports millions of dollars every year. The AD-833 inlay can be successfully read at virtually any angle and allows better read capture rates in baggage applications, where there is little control on the orientation of a bag.
