Offshore Oil Industry Leader Embraces Passive RFID with the Selection of Omni-ID Max™ Tag, Enabling Increased Safety and Efficient Inventory Tracking
Omni-ID, the leading supplier of high-performance passive UHF RFID tags, today announces that Saipem, a worldwide leading provider of construction and subsea engineering services to the offshore oil and gas industry, selected the Omni-ID Max passive RFID tag to efficiently and safely track its high-value metal assets. The Omni-ID and Saipem partnership, with support from integrator ACM-e SRL, brings the cost, productivity and tracking benefits of passive RFID technology to the offshore oil industry.
Saipem required a solution that could automate location tracking for its investment in large industrial equipment such as cranes and drilling rigs; ensure safety for Company personnel; and perform successfully in an environment surrounded by steel and saltwater. ATEX-compliant Omni-ID Max passive UHF RFID tags provide a solution for Saipem which meets all of these needs. With Omni-ID Max tags, Saipem can accurately track the location of valuable assets, saving time and money and also improving control of certificates for better insurance reporting purposes.
As a passive tag, the Omni-ID Max offers a standard read range of eight meters or more and a two meter read range with hand palm PC readers, all without the use of a battery. Most importantly, the tags can be read successfully even in offshore applications and eliminate the safety risk of personnel climbing huge oil pipes stacked in a facility to find an identification tag.
In addition to meeting Saipem's basic challenges, Omni-ID Max tags work on metal, plastic, or a combination of the two. Saipem needs to tag items such as floaters and buoys in addition to the vessels, cranes, pipes, and drilling equipment. Using a one-tag system for all equipment types enables greater cost savings and better productivity.
Omni-ID tags have also tested successfully in challenging environmental conditions. Saipem's bases around the globe can vary from -60° C to +50° C, and tags must work in all these conditions. Omni-ID tags have successfully been tested on large pipe stacks, a key component of future drilling projects, and can be used to monitor pipes using RFID from production until completion of the pipe-laying operations.
Omni-ID's established partnership with ACM-e played an integral part in the Saipem implementation becoming a reality.
