Identec Solutions’ technology to Safeguard Personnel at SKB’s underground Hard Rock Laboratory
Identec Solutions, an IDENTEC GROUP company, announced today that its Personnel Safety Solution WATCHERSYSTEM, has been selected for deployment at the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, SKB, for their underground Hard Rock Laboratory on Äspö island.
Located in Stockholm, SKB was established by two Swedish Nuclear power companies in the 1970’s. The mandate of the SKB facility is to conduct cutting-edge research on the most effective management and disposal methods possible to secure maximum safety for human beings and the environment. Considered an industry leader because of their proactive approach to nuclear waste management, SKB was rigorous in their evaluation of personnel safety solutions for this facility.
With extensive experience implementing personnel safety systems in challenging environments, Identec Solutions’ Personnel Safety Solution WATCHERSYSTEM was able to meet all SKB’s safety criteria for their underground facility. By further leveraging the expertise of Sweden-based NEOSYS AB, a RFID-based security solutions provider for the nuclear industry, Identec Solutions was able to tailor a wireless tracking system that surpassed the requirements set forth by SKB Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory.

WATCHERSYSTEM is a highly robust and exceptionally reliable Personnel Safety Solution designed specifically to offer optimum functionality in environments that contain hazardous materials. In the SKB deployment, WATCHERSYSTEM will automatically track personnel and guest location within the SKB facility as well as provide a real-time headcount. This information will enable a significantly enhanced emergency response in the event of a potentially dangerous situation or safety evacuation. With personnel often working in isolation and with risky materials, the “lone worker” feature will automatically trigger alarms and/or action when a worker exceeds set parameters in a defined area. Ultimately personnel will have a stronger sense of safety and awareness which also assists with improving operational efficiency.
