Giesecke & Devrient Wins Another Major Contract from Iraq The Republic of Iraq has commissioned Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to provide an end-to-end solution for an electronic personal ID card. As a general contractor, G&D will provide smart cards, the entire personalization system, the IT and data acquisition infrastructure, and the associated services. This includes technical support and maintenance. The contract was awarded following an international invitation to tender by the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior. The contract has a minimum term of five years.

Giesecke & Devrient Contracted to Supply Passports to Iraq

Specimen passport from G&DGiesecke & Devrient (G&D) has been contracted by the Republic of Iraq to produce and deliver the Iraqi passports for the next years. These passports will be machine-readable and meet the requirements laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for international travel.

Republic of Kosovo Introduces RFID-based ID Card

A host of applications are stored on the card’s chip, including a travel application containing biometric data that conforms to both ICAO and EU standards, and the well-known electronic ID function that is also found on Germany’s ID cards. When using the Internet to deal with public authorities, banks, or retailers online, card holders now have a secure way of providing proof of identity. What is more, this new form of ID supports the creation of legally binding electronic signatures. (Image: G&D)The Republic of Kosovo has chosen Giesecke & Devrient to manufacture and deliver its multifunctional, electronic, and entirely contactless smart ID cards. As prime contractor, the Munich-based technology company is assuming responsibility for all aspects of project management as well as for system development and manufacture of the cards.

Sub-contractor for the Automated Fingerprint Inspection System (AFIS) and for the smartcard personalization machinery is Berlin-based Bundesdruckerei GmbH. G&D is also in charge of implementing and structuring all system components necessary to support every step in the ID documentation process, from applying for a card to delivering it. These new ID cards, which the Republic of Kosovo will begin issuing to its citizens by the end of this year, are among the most up-to-date smart ID cards in use anywhere in the world.

G&D: Over 60 Million Voting Cards for Mexico

G&D will be responsible for the entire system integration and project management for the order, while the partner company will be in charge of the IT infrastructure as well as the security of buildings and facilities. The new generation of cards, made primarily of Teslin, features a watermark, a photo of the cardholder and a range of modern security features to help prevent tampering and forgery. (G&D)Over the next five years, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) is to supply Mexico with over 60 million voting cards. The Instituto Federal Electoral (IFE) is responsible for organizing all of Mexico’s elections. This independent public organization has commissioned the technology group’s Mexican subsidiary Giesecke y Devrient de México S.A. de C.V. (G&D Mexico) to manufacture and personalize the new voting cards. G&D Mexico will establish one card production center and two personalization centers in the country in collaboration with a partner company.

NXP has announced at Cards & Payments Singapore that it is near completion of its part of the 172m pieces supplied into the eKTP project. Launched in 2011, the eKTP project is one of the largest national eID deployments across the globe. The eKTP cards for 172 million citizens are part of a nationwide, multi-application, complete eID-system that comprises data capturing solutions, servers, data storage, biometric matching and smart cards, plus various infrastructure and networking solutions.
