Gador tests RFID to optimize the traceability and security of its products

Argentinean pharmaceutical leader Laboratorios Gador tests RFID’s ability to optimize the traceability and security of its productsLaboratorios Gador has completed an RFID system pilot, evaluating this supply chain technology’s ability to track and trace pharmaceutical drugs at the item, pack and pallet level. The company, one of Argentina’s largest pharmaceutical suppliers, supplies medications to nearly 2.5 million patients each month through its distribution network. The successful test, which was conducted by Telectrónica, Impinj, Zebra Technologies and UPM RFID, is the first RFID pharmaceutical pilot to be completed in Argentina, demonstrating the technology’s ability to identify, track and secure high value products that are subject to counterfeiting, diversion and theft. According to leading research firm Havoscope Black Markets, counterfeiting pharmaceutical drugs is the number one black market activity globally, costing the industry $200 billion annually.

RFID under pressure

Tag in the box: Rugged data carriers attached to the trolleys may stay with the object during the autoclave processRFID systems featuring rugged data carriers enable users in the food and animal feed industry to make challenging processes more efficient

With its RFID system BL ident, Turck offers a versatile identification solution for use even in toughest applications, such as autoclaves. Rugged, re-writable data carriers facilitate more efficient processing steps and consistent tracking systems – significantly increasing machine uptimes and thus opening up new streamlining potentials.

High ambient temperatures of up 140 °C, humidity and ambient pressures are not exactly favorable environmental conditions for electronic components. In fact, autoclaves are one of the most challenging applications in the food and animal feed industry for a good reason: autoclaves cook food or feed more efficiently and preserve the packed consumables at the same time. Only a consistent track-and-trace system that provides information about each and every processing step enables users to fully integrate this challenging application into their production chain. And only a rugged and versatile identification solution allows such a consistent track-and-trace system.

Azucarera opts for Zetes RFID solution to enhance product traceability around goods receipt and dispatch

Azucarera opts for Zetes RFID solution to enhance product traceability around goods receipt and dispatchZetes, a vendor for automatic identification, data capture and mobility solutions, has successfully completed the rollout of the pilot phase of a project based on RFID technology at the giant Azucarera Ebro Guadalete sugar refinery in Jerez, Spain. The system, which is integrated with SAP, improves external product traceability by making it possible to control outgoing lorries loaded with the finished product.

Part of the British Sugar group since May 2009, Azucarera Ebro is Spain's biggest sugar producer and the world's second largest sugar group. The company has already worked with Zetes to improve warehouse management within its refineries by automating logistical processes (inflow of the raw material and outflow of the finished product) at its Guadalete refinery. The two objectives of this latest project are to reduce errors and boost productivity.

End of FDA's enforcement discretion period for food facilities

December 8, 2009 was the end of the enforcement discretion period for FDA's new program for keeping contaminated food out of the food supply.

The law requires any "responsible party"--which includes any registered food facility that manufactures, processes, packs, or holds food for human or animal consumption--to issue a report to the online portal within 24 hours if they become aware of food that could likely cause serious consequences to the people or animals. A farm is defined as a facility if it either co-mingles products from several locations or does any one of a very wide variety of activities to prepare the product for market including washing, cooling, trimming, labeling, or packaging. These farms, regardless of size or type of production, would be subject to FDA registration.

Fruit-Alert with active RFID

Ambient Systems and IHG conduct successful revolutionary pilot with leading Spanish fruit producer and German retailerAmbient Systems and IHG conduct successful revolutionary pilot with leading Spanish fruit producer and German retailer

Dutch active RFID provider Ambient Systems and Information Highway Group (IHG), the Spanish RFID system integrator, have conducted a successful project with Bionest, the largest Spanish organic strawberry producer, and with one of Germany’s largest retailers. The use of Ambient’s third generation active RFID allowed Bionest to monitor the condition of strawberry transport from start to finish. The pilot used intelligent tags with a shelf-life algorithm, providing details of the quality of the strawberries per pallet. The integrated solution from Ambient and IHG created a ‘Cool Chain Monitor’ that offered immediate insights to substantially reduce waste and increase profit for all parties involved.
