Because of many uncertainties the introduction of RFID is a hard path to walk on for many companies. During the adoption companies and their project coordinators should have an realistic estimation about the chances and risks of RFID to implent the technology successfully.
Companies should consider the following questions in advance before starting a project:
- In which areas RFID applications can be useful and in how many there are already successfully running?
- Are there any references for your selected application or your branch?
- What are the functional requirements of your RFID solution as a result of your application?
- Sometimes there is more than one solution. Which frequency band is the best to fit my application and my partners?
- Do I want to create a closed loop system or interact with my business partners?
- How much are the costs of your selected system?
- important! The integration process. Is my it infrastructure compatible to the new RFID system?
- Which interfaces need to be customized or created?
Considerations before the adoption of your RFID project:
1. First steps are:
- Process analysis
- Working out the specifications of your RFID system
- Choice of partners
- Choice of RFID hardware
2. Second steps are:
- Allocation of your project management internally oder externally
- Set up a simulation on a test system
- Validating of the systems, piloting the system in a development environment
- Installation & Roll out
- Training of employees
- Support of the RFID system
3. The most important role is the actual integration into your existing systems:
- Connecting the ERP-, Production planing-, or warehouse management systems
- Integration of customers and suppliers
