Standardisation of RFID

E-mail Print

A vital requirement for a wide distribution and the successful application of RFID technology across land and enterprise bounderies is the implemetation and developement of consistent standards.

In the RFID market there are two major developements that a user should consider to follow. On the one hand there is the global consortium GS1 (formerly EAN International) with their EPCglobal initiative that wants to push their EPC (Electronic Product Code) GS1 provides a unique reference numbering system that can be used worldwide by companies.
On the other hand, and that is because not every company wants or should give their data to a third party provoider the International standard organisation is developing ISO/IEC-Standards. They provide a unique numbering system that is free of charge and is partly more effective than the "commercial" EPC version. The ISO committee is permanently working on application recommendations while technological and data standards are already adopted.
According to the application different standards have to be considered.

Latest progresses were made on the international conference "ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31 PLENARY" in June 2009 Sydney. You can obtain the report here: http://www.eurodatacouncil.org/Documente/09_ISO-report-Sydney090612_HIBCc.pdf
