RFID stands for “Radio Frequency IDentification” and is the contactless transfer of data via radiowaves. The RFID technology offers the possibility to transfer data via reading and writing – contactless and without the need of visual contact – on a medium like RFID tags, transponders, smart label.
The radio frequency identification technology finds its way through more and more branches and applications. The technology exists now for more than 50 years. During the second world war, it was used to identify friends from enemies. The identification via RFID perfectly supplements the barcode technology but is also capable of replacing an existing barcode infrastructure. A long time RFID was mainly used in closed-loop application, like car keys, access control and ski pass validation. With creating standards for different areas of applications it is now possible to use RFID through the whole supply chain.
