ANSES believes that “there are no new health risks”.

5G was officially launched late last year and is a very hot political issue in France and the rest of the world. Some, like deputy François Ruffin or environmental mayor of several major cities, present it as a symbol of an illusory progress that would have been imposed without real democratic discussion.

For his part, Emmanuel Macron wanted to show his support for the start of this new generation last year and scourged those who “want to return to the oil lamp”. The discussions arouse conspiratorial circles as well, and without the slightest evidence to this day, some still claim that this technology is harmful to health.

A public consultation has just started

The National Agency for Food, Environment and Occupational Safety (ANSES) has just issued a statement on this subject. The independent scientific body considers it “unlikely that the use of 5G in the 3.5 GHz frequency band will pose new health risks. “”

The opinion also returns to the 700 MHz to 2.1 GHz frequency band of 5G, which already contains the frequencies used by 2G, 3G and 4G. In this context, ANSES refers to its earlier work:

There is no evidence of health effects related to exposure to sources of electromagnetic fields in line with current digital uses. However, the investigation of possible effects such as cancer development, impairment of brain function or fertility is still the subject of research and evaluation.

With regard to the 26 GHz frequency band, ANSES is of the opinion that “there is currently insufficient data to infer the presence or absence of health effects. “Further research is therefore needed to” monitor, in particular, the evolution of population exposure as the number of antennas increases and the use of networks increases. “”

ANSES took the opportunity to announce the establishment of a public consultation on the matter, which will last six weeks. The idea is to “collect possible comments from the scientific community and interested stakeholders. »Depending on the discussions, the scientific committee could then publish a report and an opinion, which are supplemented by these positions.
