US Defense Groups Affected by Chinese Cyber Attacks

Cybersecurity company Mandiant just released a report to set off the alarm. Chinese hackers used malware to attempt to steal the identity of users of a Pulse Secure VPN company, the researchers said. The latter confirmed this information but quickly provided its customers with solutions to block this malware. The latter would only have affected a limited number of people.

However, this flaw would have allowed the attackers to break into the networks of American defense groups between October 2020 and March 2021. Experts mention the action of two groups of hackers, one of which is linked to the Chinese government. According to our colleagues from Le Figaro, in addition to these American companies, governments, financial companies from Europe and the USA were also targeted.

Cyber security is becoming a major concern for politicians

In this regard, Mandiant specifies:

We suspect that UNC2630 is working on behalf of the Chinese government and has ties to APT5. APT5 regularly targets networks with groups with high added value. Her preferred destinations appear to be aerospace and defense companies based in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

Last month Microsoft announced that it would be the victim of a gigantic cyber attack. The tech giant then stated that “tens of thousands of businesses, cities and other local institutions” were affected. Here, too, the Redmond company did not use tweezers and claimed that this offensive was being supported by the People’s Republic of China.

This is how the famous hafnium group was quoted. Known for his sophisticated methods, he has made a name for himself in the past by hacking other major American groups. This time the goal was to exploit a loophole in the Exchange messaging system to steal data about business users.

As we can see in recent events, cybersecurity is becoming a major political issue, and Joe Biden in particular has made it a battlehorse. VPNs are increasingly used by internet users who appreciate their benefits. However, it is advisable to opt for well-secured software.
