Sony intends to continue its strategy of exclusivity

This week Sony announced the latest figures related to the PS5, which revealed the excellent sales figures, the new number of PS Plus subscribers, but also the number of games sold on PlayStation consoles in 2020. The company also took the opportunity to take stock of its strategy to stay on course and expand the success of the PS5 so that the company’s newest console can follow in the footsteps of its big sister (the PS4).

During the meeting to present Sony’s latest numbers, Hiroki Totoki, the company’s finance director, confirmed that the company intends to continue its strategy of exclusivity. A strategy that was implemented by the PlayStation 3 and made a significant contribution to the success of the PS4.

We intend to increase labor costs for development [des jeux] and internal costs of 20 billion yen [env. 150 millions d’euros] to strengthen our internal software production.
To improve our software offering, we intend to continue investing in partnerships with external studios and aggressively invest in our in-house studios.

As announced last summer, Sony is also planning important partnerships with third-party providers. According to some reporters like Imran Khan, former Game Informer editor-in-chief and now co-host of Kinda Funny Games, PlayStation is preparing announcements that may shock gamers and the public at the time of their announcement.

There are things that Sony puts money into and you will be shocked to learn. Things like that to reserve a temporary exclusivity. They’ll say, “Wow, is that a game you choose?” Not because it’s bad, but because it’s huge.
I’m excited to see where these discussions will lead in the months to come as these are games that are well known to be cross-platform and that Sony is reserving for a while. I wouldn’t be shocked if they did something this crazy.

In June 2020, when the PS5 was announced, Sony confirmed that the partnership with Rockstar Games (GTA, Red Dead) had been renewed for PS5. This is already a great collaboration that could bring very good results with the arrival of a certain GTA 6.
