As with many events, Gamescom 2020 had to be satisfied with a virtual version due to the pandemic. For this year, the organizers of this annual video game fair had hoped to organize a hybrid event with a virtual part and physical rooms where the public could test the studios’ new games.
But unfortunately things are not going as planned. “The Association of the German Games Industry has decided to organize gamescom 2021 as a fully digital event. This decision was made after long discussions with partners and exhibitors. The organizers are taking into account the current situation in which too many companies will not be able to take part in physical events this year due to the ongoing difficult development. In this way, they also meet the partners’ strong need for security planning. This means that gamescom 2021 will run exclusively digitally and free of charge for all gamescom fans, ”said a statement.
In addition, the organizers remind of the success of the virtual event organized in 2020: more than 100 million views of videos, more than 50 million unique users and 370 participants. Organizers can build on the success of the 2020 virtual event to deliver an even more engaging experience this year. This event will take place August 25-27, 2021.
Hopefully there will be many more important announcements from the video game industry at this virtual event.
A return to a physical issue for IFA 2021?
While the organizers of my gamescom are making a good decision in favor of the virtual format, the organizers of IFA Berlin (another big tech event that takes place in Germany) are planning another physical event in September. “While the world is on the right track to get out of the pandemic, IFA Berlin is expected to develop like a real major event from September 3 to 7, 2021,” said a statement published a few weeks ago.
But of course we can assume that in September everything depends on the health situation. Many organizers had already announced a return to physical shows before retiring. This is the case with Gamsecon, which has just given up on its hybrid show project, but also with CES in Las Vegas.
In 2020, the organizers of this show had expected a return to normal. Ultimately, however, the evolution of the health situation forced them to organize a virtual CES in January 2021.
