behind the record numbers a real decline in productivity

The result is undisputed, 2020 was the year of all records for the video game industry. With sales of $ 165 billion, video games largely dominate the entertainment industry. The pandemic has further exacerbated this already observable trend, and gambling has become a popular activity during this time of health crisis.

However, this does not mean that everything is fine in this universe. One of the problems mentioned by the developers is the accumulation of delays, particularly related to teleworking. As part of the game developers conference, a survey enabled 3,000 developers to be interviewed to learn more about the concerns they may encounter on a daily basis.

Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus are more widely accepted than in the past

44% of the respondents reported a delay in the delivery of their game due to covid-19, while 49% of the participants were not affected. We can see here that this issue is becoming increasingly important as only 33% of developers mentioned an additional delay in the same survey last June.

However, this problem does not call teleworking into question. In addition, 35% of respondents believe that this will significantly increase their productivity. 32% say it won’t change the game. Finally, 32% believe that their creativity has been influenced by this new method of organization.

Among the other lessons from this survey, we can see that developers are a little more open to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus offerings. As a result, only 21% of them believe these systems will lower the price of games, up from 27% last year.

Le Monde has conducted an extensive investigation into the concerns the pandemic is creating for the video game industry. The General Delegate of the National Video Game Syndicate, quoted by our colleague Julien Villedieu, speaks of “a significant slowdown in productivity at company level. Some studios report a 20% to 30% drop in teams. Again, this is proof that there are some very real difficulties behind the very good numbers.
