In 5 years, electric cars could cost less than thermal

Electric vehicles cheaper to manufacture than thermal cars? That statement seems hard to believe today, but according to a study by the BloombergNEF Research Institute, it could happen by 2027.

In detail, the authors estimate that from 2025 electric cars will be cheaper than light diesel vehicles such as Kangoo and Berlingo. The same applies to petrol from 2026 as for the Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane-e. After all, city cars will be cheaper in 2027.

100% of electricity sales by 2035?

To explain this drop in prices, the authors cited a key element: the decrease in battery costs. The decrease is 89% between 2010 and 2020. This decline will continue with average prices falling from 120 euros per kWh in 2020 to 50 euros in 2030. Production volumes are also increasing, which in turn leads to price reductions.

This study was commissioned by the NGO Transport & Environment. Julia Poliscanova, senior director for vehicles and mobility for the organization, explains:

Electric vehicles will become a reality for all new buyers within six years. They are cheaper than combustion engines for everyone, from the man with a van in Berlin to the family in the countryside in Romania. Electric vehicles are not only better for Europe’s climate and industrial leadership, but also for the economy.

According to her and if Europe introduces incentive guidelines: “Battery-powered electric cars and transporters can generate 100% of sales in Western, Southern and even Eastern Europe by 2035. “”

Before that, the industry has to fight against the growing opposition. We recently told you about this disturbing trend from Germany. Activists have made it a habit to destroy charging stations. Others follow a strategy that is simply to occupy the spaces reserved for charging electric vehicles with a thermal car.
