In 2019, Samsung positioned itself as an innovation leader as one of the first manufacturers to enter the foldable smartphone market. After releasing the Galaxy Fold in 2019, the Korean giant launched the Galaxy Z Flip, then the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and finally the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in 2020.
At Presse-Citron we had the opportunity to test the latest folding smartphone from Samsung, the Fold 2. We were happy with the experience of this device, although it must be admitted that the prices for folding smartphones are outrageous at the moment.
For its part, Samsung ensures that this model has a very high satisfaction rate. According to a survey by the manufacturer, 96% of the users of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 would be satisfied with this device. In addition, 9 out of 10 users would still choose a folding device when buying a new smartphone.
In essence, despite the fact that sales aren’t exploding right now (likely due to prices), Samsung is very bullish. Half of American consumers are said to be interested in foldable smartphones, and this year shipments could triple compared to 2020.
We’re still waiting for the new foldable smartphones from Samsung
Samsung is releasing this data while its fans are still waiting for its new foldable smartphones to be released in 2021. In January, the manufacturer preferred to only introduce its new Galaxy S smartphones, which are direct competitors of the iPhone 12 and its variants.
The Korean giant’s new folding smartphones are expected to appear in the second half of the year. At the same time, Samsung Display, the Samsung subsidiary that supplies screens (for the Korean giant’s smartphones and for other brands), is already showing its next innovations. Recently, Samsung Display showed a tri-fold screen and a roll-up screen at a virtual exhibition.
More and more competitors from Samsung
This year, Samsung also saw a new competitor in the collapsible smartphone segment: Xiaomi. The Chinese brand has indeed unveiled the Mi Mix Fold, a foldable smartphone with a format very similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
According to rumors, Google will also launch its first foldable Pixel smartphone this year. Additionally, it is possible that a notice leaked when Android 12 started up.
Apple has not yet publicly expressed its interest in folding smartphones (Apple never commented on its future products). However, numerous leaks already indicate that Apple is also preparing a foldable smartphone. Incidentally, Apple recently announced new funding for the company Corning, which supplies the Ceramic Shield glass for the iPhone 12 and is currently developing glass for folding smartphones.
