Apple just gave us one more good reason to buy smart speakers

This poor performance from Apple speakers is often attributed to Siri’s lag compared to the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, a small number of home automation features, and the excessively high price of the HomePod. But since 2020, Apple seems to have changed direction with the introduction of the HomePod mini.

In fact, the HomePod mini is a smaller product that also costs less. On the other hand, the company has introduced new features for home automation. And little by little, Apple is opening its speakers for third-party services. For example, recently we learned that it is now possible to use Deezer as the default streaming service (instead of Apple Music) for Apple speakers.

And today Cupertino company gives us another good reason to choose their connected speakers. In fact, it has just been announced that the HomePod and HomePod mini will support what is known as “lossless” or lossless audio streaming on Apple Music thanks to a future update.

Audio with no loss of quality, but with a limited number of accessories

Recently, Apple announced support for lossless audio on its Apple Music streaming service. As the company explains, “Most audio compression techniques lose a certain amount of data that was in the original source file. Lossless compression is a form of compression that preserves all of the original data. “”

That is good news. However, as we explained to you in a post, you will need the appropriate equipment to take advantage of this better quality audio streaming. Apple’s Bluetooth accessories do not support this lossless audio quality. In a help document, Apple says, “AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones use the Apple AAC Bluetooth codec to ensure great audio quality. However, Bluetooth connections are not lossless. “”

However, if you have a HomePod speaker or a HomePod mini speaker, you can take advantage of this new offering from Apple. In fact, he says: “HomePod and HomePod mini currently use AAC to ensure great audio quality. Support for lossless products will be available in a future software update. “”

In essence, these speakers could soon become a must-have for those looking to enjoy lossless audio on Apple Music. As a reminder, this quality is available for the 75 million titles in the catalog.
