In partnership with Lockheed Martin, General Motors would like to offer astronauts a way to travel to the moon after they arrive. That announcement was sent to us through a press release in which we can read that the two companies are working hand in hand to “create the next generation of lunar rovers that can transport astronauts over distances on the lunar surface.”
A particularly ambitious project when we know that the autonomous automotive industry is struggling to develop on earth. Some companies like Uber or Lyft have even thrown in the towel by selling their independent subsidiaries. General Motors is fully aware of the current market and would like to offer astronauts the opportunity to beat the previous record of 1969 about 6 km around the rocket.
NASA is increasingly dependent on private companies
Thanks to this vehicle, astronauts can drive on the surface of the moon just like on Earth. As a practical matter, this car should be sent upstream and dropped off near a landing site so that astronauts can easily access it. This announcement confirms that NASA has many private institutions ready to take action to make lunar landscapes more accessible to astronauts than ever before.
Rick Ambrose, Executive Vice President of Lockheed, said of the project, “These next generation rover concepts will greatly expand the exploration scope for astronauts as they conduct high priority scientific research on the moon, which ultimately affects human understanding will affect our place in the solar system ”.
