which one to choose in 2021?

Ah the photo! Since the first iPhone, the photo quality on smartphones has improved enormously. So much so that our mobile companions in front of cameras have become the first recording tool. It is therefore not surprising that photo quality is one of the three most important purchase criteria.

With the proliferation of models, sensors, and functions, it is difficult to see clearly. And then the photo is not the only criterion of choice. A smartphone has to meet other requirements too, which makes things even more complicated. So that you can see things more clearly, we’ve put together a comparison of the best cameras on the market.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: the madness of size

It is impossible to complete this guide without talking about Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra. The Chinese giant caused a stir when it unveiled a smartphone with a more imposing photo module than ever before. And for good reason, it covers the top third of the device. Reason for this special format: The photo module has a small AMOLED screen.

Technically, the camera of the Mi 11 Ultra is very complete. It consists of three sensors, a main sensor with 50 Mpxl and a 24 mm 1: 1.95 lens. It comes with a telephoto lens and an ultra wide angle lens, both of which are connected to a 48Mpxl sensor. What should shake the competition? The answer is yes. The Mi 11 Ultra is arguably one of the three best smartphones for photography in 2021.

But that’s not the only capital. It also has a beautiful 6.81-inch OLED display that is HDR10 + compatible, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Added to this is very good autonomy, an ultra-fast charging system and excellent performance with the Snapdragon 888. A monster from all angles, including the price: count 1200 euros anyway.

Oppo Find X3 Pro: the most innovative

© Lemon squeezer

For a few years now, manufacturers have been improving photo quality, but sometimes they lack daring. In 2021, OPPO will play the innovation card with the Find X3 Pro, the first smartphone equipped with a microscope lens that can be used to photograph the world of the infinitely small.

While some will find this new device, you can rest assured that the Find X3 Pro also has its place among the best cameras out there. Its main sensor easily matches high-end references and its ultra-wide angle is arguably the best. Finally, an impressive telephoto lens completes the whole thing.

In addition to its talents as a photographer, the Find X3 Pro is characterized by its unique design. Its specialty: the glass bowl consists of a single block and covers the photo module. A wonder.

Add to this an excellent 120 Hz OLED display, first-class performance (Snapdragon 888) and the fastest charging system on the market (wired or wireless). We have the best smartphone by early 2021.

Obviously, the best of the best has a price: 1149 euros.

Galaxy S21 Ultra: Zoom Zoom

Should we still present the Galaxy S21 Ultra? Samsung was launched in January 2021 and is characterized by its ultra-premium features. If its imposing format doesn’t appeal to everyone, it remains the best-equipped smartphone in Korean.

The 6.8-inch Amoled screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz is a real eye-catcher and will appeal to multimedia and video game enthusiasts. Equipped with one of the most powerful processors on the market, it has 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is particularly effective in the field of photography thanks to a photo module made up of four sensors:

a 26mm wide angle (f / 1.8); 108 Mpxls (1 / 1.33 “; 0.8 µm photosites) sensor; PDAF, laser autofocus, optical stabilization and ultra-wide angle 13 mm (1: 2.2); 12 Mpxls (1 / 2.55 “; 1.22 µm Photosites) sensor; Dual Pixel PDAF, Super Video Stabilization One 240mm (f / 2.4) periscope lens; 10 Mpxls sensor (1 / 3.24 “; 1.22 µm photosites); Dual Pixel PDAF, optical stabilization, 10x optical zoom of a 70 mm telephoto lens (f / 2.4); 10 Mpxls sensor (1 / 3.24 “; 1.22 µm photosites); Dual Pixel PDAF, optical stabilization, 3x optical zoom

With this arsenal, the Galaxy S21 Ultra can establish itself as the most complete Samsung smartphone. If the photo quality as such is not the best on the market, the S21 Ultra is more versatile and stands out most of all for the quality of its videos. It is able to film in 8K (still a gadget today) and above all has exemplary video stabilization in 4K and Full HD. Ideal for videographers.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra, marketed for more than 1,250 euros, is still a smartphone reserved for an audience of enthusiasts and / or the rich. If you’re dying to stay in the Samsung family, we recommend going for the S21 and S21 +, which sell for less than $ 1000 and are almost as good as their big brother.

Google Pixel 5: The Magic of Algorithms

© Lemon squeezer

While most manufacturers have decided to increase the number of sensors, Google is betting on optimizing digital processing. Thanks to his mastery of the algorithms, the American giant has managed to establish itself as the king of smartphone photography. With only two sensors, Google manages to raise its Pixel 5 to the top 3 of the best photophones.

Even more than six months after its release, the Pixel 5 remains the benchmark for photo quality alongside the Huawei P40 Pro. The sharpness, the colorimetry, the contrasts, the bokeh: Google engineers have mastered the subject perfectly. Google also added an ultra-wide angle, which is largely missing in the previous model. This gives it more versatility and allows it to fully compete with its competitors.

The rest of the spec sheet deserves a premium model. High-end processor, great OLED screen, and great battery life for the first time on a Pixel smartphone.

At around 600 euros, the Pixel 5 also has the advantage of costing almost half the price of its competitors.

iPhone 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max: Apple king of videos

© Lemon squeezer

Apple, once the undisputed master of photography, had gradually let the competition catch up. Until the iPhone 11 Pro and its Max version, which allowed him to return to the top of the stage again. In 2021, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will go even further, allowing Apple to keep the location of its choice.

Thanks to a triple photo sensor, including an ultra-wide angle, the iPhone 12 Pro shines with its versatility and the quality of its recordings, which are particularly true to reality.

Above all, Apple again offers a sophisticated, intuitive and ergonomic interface that no other manufacturer can offer. After all, the iPhone 12 Pro is characterized by video stabilization and impressive image quality for a smartphone.

In addition to his talents as a photographer and videographer, the latest iPhone includes everything Apple does best. Excellent OLED screen, high performance and (surprise!) Record battery life – all the ingredients of an excellent smartphone are there.

The price of 1149 euros, however, can be more than cool. The iPhone 12, sold for 12 euros, is undoubtedly the best alternative for those who want to stay in the world of Apple.

Google Pixel 4a 5G: photo quality at a great price

© Lemon squeezer

We tend to believe that a smartphone gifted in photography is expensive. If this was the case a few years ago, it is no longer the case today. Many manufacturers offer models for less than 500 euros with which very nice photos can be taken. Among these, the Pixel 4a 5G stands out as a benchmark. And not just in their price segment.

Thanks to its magical algorithms, Google has managed to optimize the software so that the digital processing compensates for the presence of a single photo sensor. As with his Pixel 4 and 4 XL. The result is equally impressive with very detailed shots, high quality portraits and more than adequate night shots.

Obviously, Google had to make some concessions in the rest of the spec sheet in order to bring the price below the 500 euro mark. Thus, the midrange processor does the essentials without reaching the top. Wireless charging is also not part of the package.

Note, however, that with these less energy-consuming components, Google can fix the autonomy problems of its old premium models. The Pixel 4a 5G lasts up to two days and is versatile.

The Pixel 4a 5G, which was priced at under $ 400 at the time of writing, holds its spot as the best camera almost two years after its release at under $ 500. If your budget is even tighter, the Pixel 4a (4G) is a great alternative.
