Tesla cancels new model, explains Elon Musk

Later on Twitter, Sunday June 6th, Elon Musk announced new details about the event Tesla will dedicate to the Model S Plaid presentation. It has been five months since the announcement of the new version, which will replace the old “Performance”, and a demonstration is being streamed live to materialize the start of deliveries.

The Tesla boss has confirmed that the event is scheduled for this week, June 10th. At the same time, it signaled that the Model S Plaid with a speed of 0-60 miles per hour in less than two seconds will be “the fastest production vehicle of all time”. A vehicle that is “so good” that it stifles the brand’s remaining projects.

“The Model S Plaid + is canceled”

In a second part, Elon Musk tweeted that the Model S Plaid + was canceled. It wasn’t until January, when the revised Model S was presented, that an even faster model should come to the top of the range. A project eventually left aside that was deemed more necessary given the numbers of the Model S Plaid, its three engines and its 321 km / h top speed.

Therefore, the horizon of performance projects at Tesla will only count on the release of the second generation “Roadster” model, which it had already shown in 2019 at an event dedicated to the Tesla Semi (its electric truck). Marketing was scheduled for 2021, but Tesla will certainly have to postpone the date.

The electric coupe should go from 0 to 96 km / h in just 1.1 seconds, even more efficiently, as stated last month.

The end of a competition

In May, doubts began when Tesla’s configurator no longer allowed the pre-order of a Model S Plaid +. Expected for 149,000 US dollars, the price difference to the classic Model S Plaid (119,000 US dollars) was mainly due to autonomy. And the Model S Plaid + should reach 520 miles or 830 kilometers.

In a clarification to the Electrek media, Tesla said:

“We find that a longer range does not matter if the range is more than 400 miles. There is hardly a 400 mile drive that does not require the driver to stop for toilets, food, coffee, etc. “

Tesla would have decided not to advance the competition for autonomy for the time being. A topic that is currently at the center of the sales arguments of the automobile manufacturers and the race with Lucid Motors for a sedan with very long range.

Lucid is still planning to launch the “Grand Touring” version of the Lucid Air, a model with 830 km and 0 to 100 km / h in 3 seconds. We’ll have to wait until September for this information to be confirmed.
