Which sensor should you choose to monitor your sleep?

On average, you spend about a third of your life sleeping. Sleep has a direct impact on health, so you need to watch this rest period to stay in shape. Today there are a number of trackers and other related objects that you can use to keep track of the quality and quantity of sleep. We have made a selection for you between certain products, bracelets and networked watches.

The Withings sleep analyzer

The French networked health specialist Withings is positioned as the benchmark in sleep monitoring. With its sleep analyzer it offers a “sleep laboratory at home”. This sensor is placed directly under the mattress (not intrusive) and enables the quality of sleep to be monitored using various indicators: heart rate, breathing or movements.

As with most of its products, Withings worked with doctors to develop its sleep sensor. It is also the only product that can accurately measure potential sleep apnea (medical grade). It also gives you the details of the stages of REM sleep, light and deep.

The sensor must be plugged into an electrical outlet in order to function. The price is 129.99 euros and includes a 30-day test phase and a 2-year guarantee. All data is sent to the Health Mate app, which is available for iOS and Android. It is our favorite to ensure good sleep monitoring.

Apple Watch Series 6

If the Apple Watch Series 6 does not have as complete sleep data as the Withings Sleep Analyzer, it has the merit of providing a lot of advice to its owner. You are free to define sleep goals (number of hours …) and the watch offers notifications to keep you as close as possible to them. We will also appreciate the gentle awakenings on the wrist, which allow you to get out of a (light) sleep phase without brutality.

The great thing about an Apple Watch is that health monitoring isn’t just about sleep. He is a coach who accompanies you through the day, regardless of the physical activity. However, we regret the autonomy, which can sometimes be disadvantageous: the smartwatch lasts about a day, so it has to be charged at some point.

In terms of price, this sleep sensor is more expensive: the basic model with sports armband costs 429 euros. A number of personalized bracelets (and structures) are available that can quickly add to the bill. From an aesthetic point of view, however, it is the most beautiful product of all.

Emma Insights Sensor

Based on the same principle as the Withings Sleep Analyzer, the Emma sleep sensor is a small tape that is placed on the mattress and under the sheet. The German bed specialist, known for its iconic original mattress, is launching this first product at SleepTech. The module has to be activated every night, which is a bit detrimental to the experience.

However, Emma Insight allows you to monitor the depth and quality of sleep (with the different phases), heart rate, movements or even breathing. All the information collected is then transmitted to the Emma Sleep mobile application, which serves as an analysis hub. The latter will also send you individual advice on how to sleep better.

While the mattress is a key element in optimizing sleep (here is a guide on how to choose), it is not enough. Emma therefore suggests accompanying you with a product available from the official shop at a price of 129.99 euros.

The Withings ScanWatch

Do you prefer a watch to a sleep sensor? The last gadget in our comparison is French and was (also) developed by Withings. The Withings ScanWatch is the most powerful of all the brand’s watches. It can boast of performing a powerful scan of all vital signs every second. Including sleep monitoring.

In contrast to an Apple Watch Series 6, the Withings ScanWatch has a battery life of 30 days. So you can sit back and relax and recharge it from time to time. The watch monitors your sleep quality (and gives you a score) and above all offers a smart wake-up. Depending on your sleep phase, it will wake you up sooner or later (you determine the time window yourself) in order to optimize the waking up phase.

All management is also done through the Health Mate application (iOS and Android). This model costs 279.99 euros. Note that it measures a whole range of health data (EKG, heart rate, SPO2, physical activity, etc.). It’s one of the most complete on the market.
