It arrived at Lemon Squeezer, Ratchet & Clank a few days ago: Rift Apart is clearly one of the most anticipated “next-gen” games of the year. No cross-gen here (like for Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo 7 or God of War …), but a new episode that was designed and edited for Sony’s new PS5. In addition to the technology showcase promised by the developers for a few weeks, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart also had to be flawless in terms of content. And after playing 100% of the game a few days ago, we have to admit that the contract is being excellently fulfilled.
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart at the best price!
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the test!
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was formalized last year and is finally coming to PS5. Born on PS2, the saga remains an emblematic license for Sony and a real guarantee of quality for gamers (apart from one or two episodes that are a bit “apart”). With this new opus, Insomniac Games promises to take players on a great multi-dimensional adventure, of course accompanied by Ratchet and Clank, but also by Rivet, a brand new Lombax. All of these beautiful people must cross the dimensions and face the traps of Dr. Thwart Nefarious, but not only …
Of course we won’t spoil any script element of this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for you, but don’t worry at this level. The story is solid, the progress is very pleasant with different planets to visit, and the integration of Rivet is admirable. Add to this punchy dialogues, colorful and detailed environments, ubiquitous humor, cutscenes worthy of a (good) Pixar feature film, and some amazing twists and turns in this quest to repair the enormous chaos.
Of course, we find plenty of characters from previous episodes here, and those who have gotten close to the saga’s canon opus will no longer be delighted to see certain supporting characters in a whole new light. Despite everything, nothing prevents you from getting started with this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart without having played a previous opus. You will inevitably miss a few testimonials, but nothing to stop you from enjoying the adventure.
Well … is he the next generation or not this Ratchet?
So the question we ask ourselves about this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is obviously whether or not he is a worthy representative of the next generation. The tension doesn’t need to be lengthened, yes, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a monumental next-generation slap. The game has three performance modes, but like Spider-Man Miles Morales, there is a 60 fps / ray tracing mode that is sure to be fine for everyone. The whole thing moves with just outrageous fluidity, the animations are mind-blowing and the display is just mind-blowing for peepers.
It’s very simple, you always have your finger ready to press the Share button on the controller to take a screenshot and / or enter the game’s photo mode, note that the screenshots that appear in this article all of us were recorded via the same share button.
Obviously, “Magic SSD” Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart doesn’t require any apparent loading time, and those who like to analyze every corner of their screen will get their money’s worth as the developers have refined every detail of the environments, animations, weapons … Sometimes we have one incredible sound and light festival to do with the added bonus of a masterly staging, especially when we get to the different planets, of an amazing class. To put it simply, you will take it all in and ask for more.
On the gameplay side, there are no nasty surprises with this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as we find the series-specific maneuverability with always the same system for changing weapons (via a circular menu), boxes to break for recovery bolts, hidden gold bolts, plans, affording new combinations … The good news is that the developers incorporated a lot of the original sequences here, especially on the backs of various creatures, not to mention hacking sessions (with a cute little robot spider) and reflection phases with Clank. Note that the latter can certainly be skipped if you don’t want to take the lead (and I’ll admit that luckily I skipped the last ones).
The game allows you to travel to different planets, each of which obviously has its own particularities. Overall, the different levels are all very well done (except maybe one whose inspiration is a little less extravagant …), of course always with a main goal, but also sometimes quite interesting side quests. As always, remember to search every corner to break all the boxes, you will inevitably be rewarded …
The other good surprise of this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the excellent use of DualSense. Without reaching the perfection of an Astro game room, the game signed by Insomniac Games makes intelligent use of the functionality of the PS5 controller. The loudspeaker is used discreetly and brilliantly, as is the haptic feedback, but also the trigger, with (as with Returnal) several pressure levels depending on the weapon. We have already said and repeated that the DualSense is a real game changer for this new generation of PlayStation, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a new excellent ambassador.
Perfect Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart? Not necessarily…
It is undeniable, no matter which performance mode you choose, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a real visual slap in the face at all times, a deluge of special effects and other breathtaking panoramas. The same observation on the audio side, with impeccable sound design, top synchronization, not to mention a successful staging and new brilliantly integrated characters. It is hard to deny a very “classic” construction, however, as this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as “next-gen” as it may be, does not revolutionize the original formula in any way (and some will say “the better”) ).
Likewise, the teleportation phases that have been highlighted in such detail across the game’s various trailers ultimately have nothing really transcendent … or even useful to tell the truth. In all honesty, we were more surprised by other gameplay mechanics, more “classic” but otherwise exhilarating (visually and / or emotionally), than those quick movements that are more noticeable than anything else we end up doing without. On the other hand, the dimensional changes in real time, which are really breathtaking for once, are particularly noteworthy.
Arsenal Side, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is generous, very generous … even too generous. Guns have always been a key element of the saga, but we have to admit that they are a little too numerous here. Granted, that makes a choice, and “better is worth too much than too little,” as they say, but of the twenty weapons available, you will really only use four or five large maximums. Obviously we find here the evolutionary side of the Lombax as well as the weapons that evolve up to level 5 and can be improved via the raritarium restored in the levels.
A “New Game +” mode is also part of the game, with the option of upgrading weapons to higher levels (in Omega mode). In terms of lifespan, it took us a little more than a dozen hours to complete the game 100% in normal mode (therefore not counting the New Game +).
When Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart finally brings a new gameplay duality with Rivet, it’s a bit of a shame to note that the latter is actually a clone of Ratchet. The range of motion is 100% modeled on that of Lombax born on PS2, and even if the two characters go on a separate adventure, they’ll share the exact same weapons, ammunition, skills … So much so that it does with one Armor on your back and a helmet on your head is sometimes just impossible (or almost) knowing whether you are wearing a ratchet or a rivet. But between us we argue a little …
Our take on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS5
Although it is based on a very classic formula, this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart manages to captivate the player with its unbelievable technical implementation, an equally successful sound design, but also a very dynamic staging and a variety of situations that require the least amount of fatigue prevent from holding on. The integration of Rivet is nothing short of admirable and it is a real pleasure to follow the new multidimensional adventures of these two Lombaxes. In addition there is a very good humor, but also some “serious” sequences, not to mention an always so entertaining gameplay, so many elements that make it possible for you to have a wonderful time with this Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Not everything is perfect, of course, but what a joy to be able to enjoy a game of such visual richness, brilliantly designed and intelligently written, that is palpable from the first to the last second. Very high art, very simple.
